The Workshop

工房

The Mokuzai Philosophy
Time as a tool.

In a world that demands immediacy, we choose the pause. Every Mokuzai Art piece is born from contemplation and absolute respect for the raw material. We do not force shapes onto the wood; we listen to it to reveal the hidden beauty within its grain.

The Way of Wood: The Shokunin

The soul behind the chisel

Behind every Mokuzai Art piece is Ricardo, an artisan whose life has been deeply intertwined with the discipline and values of Japanese culture.

As a 5th Dan in Shito-Ryu Karate, Ricardo understands that mastery is not a destination, but a path (Dō). The same reverence, silence, and respect demanded by the tatami are applied when he enters his workshop. To him, there is no difference between the flawless execution of a kata and the precise cut of a gouge; both require absolute focus, intention, and a calm mind (Mushin).

His fascination with the steel of traditional knives and the organic warmth of wood converge in this project. He does not seek to master the material, but to listen to it, understanding the grain of each piece to reveal its natural beauty.

The Signature (リ)

Every piece that leaves the workshop bears his engraved mark: リ (Ri). More than a signature, it is a seal of honor. It represents the promise that the piece was created with the same integrity, patience, and unwavering spirit demanded by the martial art.

Hands and Wood

True Japanese craftsmanship does not seek sterile perfection, but harmony. We use traditional tools to keep the organic essence of every cut alive.

  • Traditional nail-free joinery (Kigumi technique).
  • Hardwoods carefully selected for their density and acoustics.
  • Natural finishes that allow the material to breathe.
